Project Description:

The Limbe Wildlife Centre (LWC) is a rehabilitation centre caring for ex-wild species native to Cameroon, mostly primates. The animals have been orphaned by the illegal bushmeat trade and/or illegally captured. The project strives to provide the highest standards of care including advanced veterinary and health screening, quarantine, routine testing and treatment, and often-emergency care upon induction. Beyond its primary responsibility of caring for these animals in collaboration with the Government of Cameroon, the project’s aim is to advocate for wildlife and habitat protection for the conservation of regional biodiversity, support enforcement of wildlife protection laws and conservation education.


Position Description:

The Project Manager will manage the daily operations of the project in collaboration with the Conservator and the project Directors. Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the health and welfare of approx. 200 captive wild animals

  • Supervise approx. 30 local and 1 expatriate staff, plus short-term expatriate volunteers

  • Maintain and developing national and international collaborative relationships

  • Raise funds through applications to international funding agencies and other sources

  • Manage the overall project budget

  • Oversee enclosure maintenance, and design and construction in collaboration with directors

  • Oversee development and implementation of education programs

  • Plan strategy for long term project development, including potential reintroduction programs, in collaboration with the directors

  • Oversee research carried out by internal or external researchers

  • Represent the project in all official matters, in consultation with the directors

  • Take responsibility for maintenance of grounds, equipment, vehicles, and other materials


The position involves working closely with the Cameroonian Government.


Qualifications/Experience: No specific qualifications are required as the position demands a mixed skill set, not limited to any particular background. However the position would strongly suit somebody with a veterinary medicine and/or animal keeping background.


Attributes include strong leadership and teamwork skills, resourcefulness, flexibility and adaptability, energetic yet calm, commitment to professional wildlife welfare and conservation issues (particularly with respect to African primates), previous overseas experience very desirable, ability to write proposals. A mature attitude is required. Specific skills and experience in captive care and management of primates, construction and maintenance, administration and accounting, and public relations are beneficial. Willingness to seek advice and take direction as needed is crucial.


It is important that the project manager has the skill to make best use of the human, material and financial resources available, all of which may at times be limited, for the success of the center.


The position may be suitable for a couple with a balance of skills.


Fluent written and spoken English is required. French is an asset.



Salary/funding:

A stipend is available, the details of which will be negotiated with the successful candidate. Food and accommodation are provided by the project.


Terms of appointment:

Minimum 1 year (subject to a three-month performance review).


Position to start as soon as possible.
